Texas Representative Victoria Neave has filed legislation that would protect women from fearing deportation if they seek help from a domestic violence shelter. House Bill 652 would keep these shelters off-limits to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The firm’s David Coale talked to KDFW FOX 4 about the proposed bill.
“We have an exclusion in the statute now for places of worship,” said Coale. “This would make domestic violence centers be like that as places you just go and get your needs taken care of without having to worry about law enforcement immigration status and so forth. But is it constitutional? Probably not.”
